LJHCA Shares Ways to Lower Air Conditioning Bill

The La Jolla HVAC Contractors' Association (LJHCA) has shared tips on how to lower air conditioning bills during the summer months. In its recent blog post, the LJHCA mentioned that air conditioning takes up a huge chunk of a home's energy bill and lowering it would mean budget savings and at the same time, lower carbon footprint.

Foremost in the LJHCA's tip is to conduct an energy audit of the home, and make sure that all leaks and gaps are carefully sealed using caulking. "These leaks and gaps allow the cool air to escape, making it harder for the HVAC system to operate harder, and when the air conditioning system works harder you can be sure it is consuming more power than it should, raking up your energy bills," explains Phil Thompson president of the LJHCA.

Personal Finance website Balance.com also came up with advice on how to lower air conditioning costs especially during the height of the summer months. One of their tips include regular maintenance of the air conditioning system to ensure that it is working on optimal condition. Another advise their gave is to take full advantage of an automated thermostat.

"Install a programmable thermostat so you can vary the temperature according to when you're home. Set it to 78 degrees when you're home. If you'll be gone for more than a few hours, it makes sense to set the air conditioning at 85 degrees while you're gone."

USA Today also came up with tips on lowering air conditioning bills. Reducing the amount of sunlight inside the home and insulating the whole house is just some of the advice they shared. Air Conditioning Wik

"Sunlight streaming in through your windows raises the temperature of your home. By blocking the sunlight, you can calm that effect. Planting some shade trees outside your windows can curb encroaching sunlight while blackout shades or curtains are another low-cost option. Insulate your walls and attics - Windows aren't the only part of your home that leak air. Attics, walls and crawl spaces lose air as well. Professionally insulating your home is one of the best ways to increase energy efficiency. If you have an older home, this could be worth the investment."

The SDHCA says the whole household has to be aware of energy conservation tips so that everyone can share in the effort of lowering air conditioning bills.
